We follow the Saxon math curriculum in Stanton, which is built upon spiraling skills. A new skill will be introduced with each lesson, but the practice problems will be a combination of all skills learned. This prevents students from forgetting former skills while they are learning new ones. Below you can find some helpful documents as well as recommendations for websites and apps that can provide support at home.
HELPFUL DOCUMENTS:
Below you will find a math reference sheet and a multiplication chart. Please feel free to print these out for use at home. The NUMBER ONE skill all fifth graders need to master is knowing their multiplication facts. Practice makes perfect! It will make things so much easier in class and on their daily work.

WEBSITES AND APPS:
I'm usually reluctant to recommend websites and apps because it seems like they disappear and change faster than I can keep up! I do have a few that I feel are worth mentioning. The cost for all of these is FREE!!

Click on the button below to visit www.multiplication.com. It will open in a new window. This site is filled with many exciting and competitive games that will all help strengthen multiplication facts. It does require an updated Adobe Flash Player to display the graphics of the games. I found on my computer that Firefox was the best browser for this website.

The app Sushi Monster is an app from Scholastic that allows students to practice addition or multiplication. This is more than just practicing facts, though. Students must combine the correct numbers to equal a particular sum or product, and the numbers get pretty big! This app definitely makes me hungry for sushi!
The Khan Academy app is not just for math, but it is an excellent resource full of very valuable information. In fact, the sheer amount of information available might be just a bit overwhelming for students. Therefore, I suggest a parent opening this app and selecting the skill FOR the student, otherwise they may get lost in the forest of lessons! After a particular skill is selected, users have the option of clicking on the triangles to watch short tutoring videos explaining the skill in wonderful detail, OR users may select a practice activity. Practice questions appear on the screen and students can use either their fingers or a stylus to show their work and write in their responses. It covers a very wide variety of math concepts and skills from arithmetic operations to algebraic thinking. My one negative with this app (and it may have just been me -- user error!) was that some of the skill selections were cut off at the edge of my iPad screen. This did not affect the videos or the practice questions, though! Set some time aside for this one! You're going to need it!
